Abstract

case study innovation interface workplace pro-environmental behavior Sustainability
Research to date on workplace pro-environmental behavior (WPEB) has focused primarily on identifying its individual antecedents at the micro-organizational behavioral level using a social psychology perspective. Although valuable, this chapter adopts a more sociological perspective to give attention to the interaction between organizational context and WPEBs. Through qualitative investigation of the WPEBs of innovation team members at Interface’s European headquarters in the Netherlands, this case study offers insights to the individual and organizational determinants of WPEB. Our results illustrate how an organization-wide set of WPEBs can lead to deep, transformational change toward sustainability both within and beyond the company. To help guide future research, this chapter presents a conceptual model of transformative WPEB at the organizational level to capture the upward spiral of individual WPEBs, which link together through a process of social diffusion between individuals, the organization structure and routines, and value chain actors.
