Abstract
The milieu is regarded as a particular form of network (geographic based network) in which the spatial, cultural and psychological proximity between actors determine a local and specific mode of regulation.

In this paper the milieu is compared and contrasted with other conceptual approaches focussing on similar type of phenomena. Then taking into account the issue of network boundaries and the characteristics of actors involved, the advantages and drawbacks of the concept of milieu are compared with the network approach. Finally, an attempt is made to draw some managerial implications.
