Expertise

My research takes a critical perspective on leadership, identity and ethics in organizations. I question the assumption that practices such as coaching and leadership development are neutral, harmonious or purely in the service of the individual, and I examine instead how they are shaped by power relationships and organizational interests, and what this means for the people who take part in them.

I am also interested in collective organizing, and in how identity and gender are negotiated within social movements: how people come to see themselves as a "we", whose voices define that collective, and whose are left at the margins.

A further strand of my work looks at craft work and at how class shapes working lives, including the ways skill, recognition and worth are unequally distributed.

Across these settings, I ask who benefits from the way work and organizing are arranged, and who bears the cost?
