My research sits at the intersection of critical accounting, feminist scholarship, democracy, and technology. I examine how accounting and technologies shape power relations, accountability, and participation within organisations and society. My work is driven by a concern for emancipation, with a focus on critically questioning gendered structures and relations, as well as democratic and political systems more broadly, and how these are reproduced or challenged through accounting and technological practices. It is underpinned by a strong theoretical orientation, drawing in particular on Judith Butler, Chantal Mouffe, Paulo Freire, and broader critical literature.
A central strand of my research explores, from critical and feminist perspectives, how accounting and technological practices intersect with broader social inequalities. I focus particularly on individual experiences of these systems, examining how people encounter, navigate, and are affected by accounting and technological practices in everyday organisational life. This includes how such systems can reproduce or challenge marginalisation, particularly in relation to gender and other intersecting forms of difference, and how alternative forms of accountability might support more emancipatory and just societies.
A second, closely connected strand engages with questions of democracy and emancipation in the context of technological change. As digital platforms, data infrastructures, algorithms, and artificial intelligence become increasingly embedded in organisational and social life, I explore how these developments reshape democratic participation, transparency, and accountability, as well as the conditions under which technology can support more inclusive and participatory forms of governance.
Through these interconnected agendas, I contribute to debates on the societal role of accounting and technology, advancing approaches that strengthen democracy, foster inclusion, and support more just and accountable futures.
